St Paul's Anglican Church
Bakery Hill
St Paul's was established in June 1854 when the first resident clergy was appointed to the goldfields, the same year as the Eureka Rebellion. The church was built in 1857, services were held in a tent prior to this, and rebuilt in 1862 to accommodate 800 people.
Disaster struck on April 1st 1864 when, after severe storms, the church began to subside into the mine tunnels beneath. The tower survived and the east window was saved. . Rebuilding was accomplished in 12 months and opened in 1865. The East windows are amongst the earliest surviving example of ecclesiastical stained glass windows in Victoria.
