Ballarat Heritage Weekend

Ballarat University Buildings

Lydiard Street South, Ballarat

Established in 1870, the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB) is one of the most historic heritage buildings in Ballarat. The nineteenth century brick buildings include remnants of the former Ballarat Gaol and former Court House. The Ballarat Gaol was closed as a penal institution in 1965 and its grounds later became part of the SMB Campus.

While you are here, make sure you also wander through SMB’s Botanical Gardens, established in 1879. The Gardens were inspired by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, the curator of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Don’t miss this opportunity.
